Weekly Chat (Non-Osprey), Sunday 28 July 2013

Happy new week and new month!

The world's oldest known calendar device has been found in Scotland. It's based on the phases of the moon, as well as the position of the sun, and is 10,000 years old.

That's 5,000 years older than the first formal calendar devices found in the Near East, which were thought to be the earliest. The device provides further evidence that Scotland's early civilisations were much more advanced than previously thought.

  • i have never been to the Tatton Show Lindybird, only live 15 mins away, been to Cheshire Show a couple of times many years ago

  • Hi lindyloo -   Yes, I went to the Cheshire Show many years ago  but it was very spread out and hard work to walk around all the different events.  Only bit I enjoyed really was the Craft Tent!

EDIT:   to explain to those not sure, the Cheshire Show itself is quite different and more of an Agricultural Show, with farm animals, tractors & equipment etc.   Nice for families though.

  • my dad used to work on the estate at tatton for many years and mum used to work in the house, about 65 years ago

  • Lovely pics, dibnlib and Lindy. Thank you.
  • LINDY   Thank you for all your wonderful and colourful pics. I could definitely smell those Lillies.

We have our 2 big shows coming up this week. The Black Isle Show on Wed/Thurs and is very much a farm show, and on Fri/Sat it is The Moy Show which is everything to do with field sports. I will be there on Saturday, so hope the weather is fine.

I am keeping an eye on the weather and thinking that I may not be walking Dillon this evening. He has had 2 good walks today and the evening walk is OHs idea so he may well walk the boy when he comes in at 8.30ish. I don,t particularly dilike the rain, but drying a Goldie after he gets a good soaking is hard work.

    Last 2 pics I hope

  • Hi Heather:  Hope all is well with you.  I've been pushed for time to reply to all the recent posts, and suddenly there have been a lot more than there were only a week or so ago!!

Annette:  Doesn't seem all that long since you were getting ready to harvest the oranges last time.

Diane:  Not heard from you about how you have gone on with your tree problem.  Hope it all got sorted out OK.

dibnlib:  More great pics!  Enjoyed those!

  • Linda – no thunder with our big storm but the rain was like during thunder: what my Dad used to describe as “coming down like stair-rods”. Beautiful afternoon and evening! Lovely Flower Show photos – thanks for sharing them. I always like those veg displays at shows! Lilies are nice to see, but I have to stay away due to allergy.

Heather – thanks for reminder to prune our Weigela – I never know the right time, but am sure your OH knows what he is doing!

Brenda – amazing to think of your OH cutting the grass today! How nice to have puppy (Penny?) visiting – she said, tongue in cheek! But I am sure you enjoyed seeing your Son and DiL.

Dibnlib – yes, Annan made it onto the news today! I think the holding tank on one of the greens was full to overflowing, and the old Town Burn (now culverted) rose from under the streets at the same time that water was flowing down from our higher side of town. More nice Canal photos, thanks – I love boats although I have never sailed! I hope it will be dry for the Moy show. The year we went to the Black Isle Show we got so wet that we didn’t care anymore and thoroughly enjoyed it!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Annette, Lindy...: You asked about my tree situation. I got estimates from three different tree services, and then I called my homeowners' insurance company last week. After my deductible, they only agreed to pay for dropping the tree and having the wood "chunked up" -- but not enough for removal and clean up. So I need to find someone who will take the wood for firewood and haul it away, and then I'll need to clean up the site myself.

It looks like a scene from a Stephen King novel. The tree service guys assured me that people will want the wood because locust wood is very desirable for burning in fireplaces, wood stoves, etc.

Even though I emphatically told the insurance claims adjuster that the tree could fall on the house, she didn't bother to rush the payment to me -- just promised that it would go out in a couple of days. The tree service guy says he won't be able to get to me right away, anyway.

Apparently, no one (except you folks) cares whether an 80-foot tree falls on me. We had 20 mile-per-hour winds Saturday night. Neither my brother nor my friends have even bothered to call and find out whether I'm still standing or buried in the rubble!

  • OG: I read about your town on the BBC site. I hope you and EE remain safe from the flooding. I won't offer any advice about the Hoover. I always manage to catch my vacuum cleaners on fire!

I hope everyone else is safe from the storms!

Brenda: Sounds like the puppy was a bit of a challenge. :-)

Dibnlib: Your photos were really beautiful!

Lindyloo: Lovely photos from you, too!

Clare and Limpy: I hope you had a good time at the owl sanctuary. Snowy owls are one of the most beautiful creatures on earth.

AQ: Congrats on the successful installation of the new vanity.

I forgot to say hello to Starling last time I posted. Hi, Starling!

Lindy: Sorry that your thunderstorm was loud and disconcerting! I love lilac trees. Sometime in the future, I'd like to plant some here. A neighbor used to have them when I was a child. Your flower show photos are wonderful. I really enjoyed them. I'd like to have that large red bowl and its watery garden. The lillies are fabulous. The Monday Smile about waking up tired and going to bed wide awake is me!

Annette: Oh dear, a barn swallow nest in the window shade. Your daughter will have some cleaning up to do. My wasps will stay around until autumn, if I don't spray them. If they aren't aggressive when I pull some weeds next to the house, I'll just let them be. The wrens like to eat them, and I think they are good pollinators. I don't like to kill anything if I can avoid it. There were a dozen on the nest today, newly hatched. I also noticed that the bats were back last night.

Margo: My thoughts are with you.

    Night, all.

  • Heather: I hope your husband's scan will produce good results and relieve your mind. My Mom's passing here at home was very traumatic for me, so I can empathize with your fears and anxiety. I wish I could say something that would help you. I'm sending you strength and good thoughts.
