Weekly Chat, Sunday March 7

Hi all. Off to read last week's latest posts.

  • Evening all: Busy bird-sightings day today.  And more to come.

AQ: I remember whole families leaving the UK for Australia, passage paid. My step-sister and her family was one - her name was Violet. I can't imagine how my father felt saying goodbye to her - or me, when I came to the States. He never saw her again. Doesn't bear to think about.  Often wonder if I'd do it again....    Then my friend's family across the road from us in Watford went to Tasmania.

I hate having my hair done - wear it tied back or do a perfunctory blow dry and clip it back.  I hate looking in the mirror and wondering: "Who's that?!"

Got a lot of household stuff done today, phone calls, errands, etc.  Then made the mistake of stopping by my favorite shop and found a lovely sheer crinkly cotton summer shirt that never has to be ironed!!   Hey, that's my kind of shirt!   Did buy a webcam and got it up and running, which has been a hoot (and scary too). OMG, do I really look like that!   Eeek. But have to sort out something with the microphone settings. Hope to call - and see! - my sister over the weekend. Speaking of which, how can it be the weekend again?  Then my daughter reminded me that the clocks go forward Saturday night....

Watching "It Came From Beneath the Sea," while doing other stuff. It's a 1950s-vintage Sci-Fi film with all the appropriate special effects from that era - a giant octopus from what I can gather.  Another exciting Friday night in Santa Barbara....

  • Oh my. Have just been browsing Google Earth Street Vew for the UK - was able to look right into the windows of my sister's house in Aunsby, even saw her blue glass lampshade; OH's Range Rover in the carport, but no sign of her little blue car in the driveway.  Very odd; kept thinking that if I just kept clicking on the little camera icons, I'd "meet" her on her way back from the shops!  Made me quite homesick.

  • Wow, Annette, that's remarkable to be able to look right into your sister's house. A little unsettling I would think. You do sound homesick, not only in this post but past ones, too. Have you ever thought of returning to the UK to live? Is that within the realm of possibility? That's a nosy question -- no need to answer. I just hate to see you with a heavy heart. I know you miss your sister terribly. The world today offers so many possibilities, but sometimes we're happier going back to where we started. I hope your new webcam setup will allow you to feel a lot closer to your sister. Technology can be wonderful.

You seem to enjoy California, though. I sometimes watch a webcam that is on the dash of a long-haul, big-rig trucker. As he is driving, you can watch the landscapes from all over the country. He has been travelling through California the last couple of days, south to north. It sure is beautiful.

Good luck with the webcam. :-)

  • Morning all.

Alan Thanks for the pics of the baby eagle - not even as big as Mem's head!

Can someone please tell me how to get Google Street view - the box is ticked but just get the old aerial shots.

More Crufts agility shortly, so back later.

  • Hi Patriciat

Google Street view, there are 2 ways:

    1. In Google Maps, search for the place you want to start at - you can enter place names, or in the UK a postcode. When you get the map up, the zoom bar has an orange stick man just at the top of it. If you click on the stick man and start dragging him, the streets which have Street View available, show up in blue - position the stick man where you want to start. In this mode, you can then go on a "trip" in Street View,  by clicking in the desired direction of travel.

    2. In Google Earth, check the Street View box, in the Layers panel on the LHS. As you zoom in, more and more camera symbols appear, and clicking on one of them will take you into one of the 360 degree photos which make up Street View.

Hope this is clear. At my place, only the car was photographed, but my neighbour and a friend got "caught on camera". I've realised Street View can be used for seeing some of the places the ospreys have visited in Europe - for example you can see Beatrice's winter roost on the Rio Guadiaro.

  • So it’s weekend again – pleasant morning here.  OH started preparing veg patch yesterday afternoon, and my cold-frame is in place to warm the ground for some salad.  Were out at a church event early evening, for families but they like the support of some of the oldies.

AQ – hope you got used to your hair and enjoyed the engagement celebrations.  Thanks for continuing the history.  I remember people emigrating from England to Australia in the 1950s – also remember two girls spending a year at my primary school on an extended visit “home”.  My family didn’t have any pioneers that I ever knew, but there was an uncle who had gone to Canada and then got killed as a Commonwealth soldier in the 1914-18 war.

Annette – Enjoy your no-iron shirt!  Don’t think I will get a web-cam – early experience using one on a computer course was poor (but I expect they have improved) and also I think I might forget what I was (not) wearing!  Our clocks here in the UK go forward night of 27th/28th March.  Dianne is right, you do seem to miss your sister (and the UK) quite a lot – maybe the webcam will help – or maybe you are due a visit soon?

OH back from Post Office – had to post an old spare phone as Son was having a line installed and realised his phone is still in a box at his sister’s house!  Must now do some stuff indoors and out.  Hope for more reports of Ospreys crossing the Channel today.

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Good morning all hope you are all well.  Just a quick look while OH is out to try and catch up with things.

Thanks Alan for the news of ospreys in the UK, now I am really getting excited.  Thanks also for the news of the second eagle egg pipping.  How tiny they are when they first hatch and how careful Mum and Dad are with them.

    Have a good weekend all.
