If variety is the spice of life, then yesterday's volunteer work party was close to a vindaloo!

There was a good turnout for the day, with 16 volunteers attending.  We started with a talk by Senior County Archaeologist, Ursilla Spence.  Ursilla brought in numerous artefacts that were found during an archaeological dig that was carried out here at Langford in 2010.  Items included numerous sherds of pottery, including part of a huge amphora and a dinner plate with the dinner still on it!

We then walked through the processing plant to look at the site in flood.  The flood waters have receded by a good 2ft since last week, but the change in the landscape was still quite shocking to those that hadn't seen it before .

The group then moved on to the new car park area off Cottage Lane and made very short work of the day's task - crown-raising of trees in a plantation woodland block.  They made a very good job of it too.

After lunch, it was back up to the top of the site to look at the rest of the flood and wait for the starling murmuration.  This was well worth the wait, as everyone was mesmerized by the swirling mass of around 20, 000 starlings going to roost in the silt lagoons, against the backdrop of a stunning sunset.

This was the last monthly volunteer work party of 2012, so we'd like to thank those of you that have attended this year and made them such a sucess.
