Following my recent botancial blog, I took these photos on Phase 1 last week and thought we haven't had a quiz for a while. Any guesses at ID'ing these plants before they flower? Answers next week....

  • It's always a good challenge to identify plants without their flowers! Anyone have a go at these?

The top picture shows common toadflax, or Linaria vulgaris. a perennial associated with grasslands, road verges and hedgerows. It is common and widespread throughout most of the UK and has beautiful yellow and orange inflorescences - you won't miss it!

The second picture is lady's bedstraw, or Galium verum. Another common and widespread species of grasslands, it is very common up on Phase 1 and the public footpath. When in flower, the small, star shaped yellow flowers are very densely packed and can almost carpet the area where the plant is growing.
