It’s been a great few days for bird sightings at Langford, even if the weather has taken a turn for the worse again! On Friday last week a trip down to Phase 2 to survey for waders produced more than we bargained for, as a rather large looking egret caught our attention, hiding behind some reeds. The bird didn’t show itself for a further 5 minutes after we spotted it, but much to everyone’s delight, it did eventually reveal itself as Langford’s first confirmed record of a great white egret. The bird only stayed one day, but it was enough time for us all to see it feeding away on Phase 2.

Also on Friday down on Phase 1, volunteer John Ellis picked up a turnstone. This is the first record at Langford since May 2000, again the bird didn’t stay long, but another great spot!

And the rain today didn’t put the birds off either with singing Cetti’s warbler from the silt lagoons, a kingfisher perched on top of the Phase 2 water level gauge board and up to 8 little egrets on site.
