Yesterday (10th November) saw our second ‘Conservation Experience’ day here at Langford (see blog from 28th October). Following on from our first day two weeks ago, we welcomed 11 guests onto site for a day of scrub management on Phase 1.
The weather was slightly kinder to us than it was for our first day, with plenty of sunshine and calm conditions and the group soon got stuck into thinning the scrub block on the eastern edge of Phase 1.
This scrub is undergoing it’s second winter of management and throughout the next few months we hope to thin the block out, leaving the existing trees and shrubs to grow on without over crowding and to increase light levels getting through to the floor. This has already proved successful where we were working last winter, with a significant improvement in the ground flora this summer.
With such a good group of people on board, we made significant inroads into the southern end of the scrub block, making the area look so much better already – a brilliant effort by everyone involved. There was even time for the group to have a good walk around our new visitor facilities, led by volunteer and boardwalk designer and builder, Dave Watt.
Many thanks to all the participants of both days, to Stuart and Pam Nelson and Phil Young from The Lodge for their organisation and help on the days and to Langford volunteers Stuart Carlton and Dave Watt for attending.
