There’s been a lot happening at Lake Vyrnwy this summer. Whatever the weather, there’s always something to do at the reserve, whether walking the trails, exploring the sculpture park, bird watching in the hides, or having fun in the wild playground.

Back in July, we had a mighty meadows event, to celebrate International Meadows Day, where the public were able to spend a few hours with our wardens identifying the plants and insects we have here on our beautiful reserve. Later that same month, we held a very successful nightjar walk, where we saw and heard a beautiful male bird at close quarters and also got some very eerie views of the Lake Vyrnwy Landscape via a snazzy pair of night vision binoculars.

August being school holidays, we’ve been holding our Terrific Tuesdays nature activity sessions for children every week on – well, Tuesdays, naturally! And, as you can see, the activities are not just for children, parents are more than welcome to join in too.

The hands-on, creative activities include pond dipping, owl pellet dissecting, scavenger hunts, bug hotel building and stone painting, the last of which produced some very impressive results last week!

The membership recruitment team has also been out and about. Last weekend, we were at the Montgomery show, a small but lively event, the highlights of which was some very entertaining bird of prey flying and the Galloping Acrobatics.

Lots of RSPB members came over to talk to us and it was great to tell people who hadn’t been to the reserve yet all the fantastic things they can see and do at Lake Vyrnwy, not just in summer but all year round.
