At last, autumn is here. A few swallows are still hawking over the water, even in yesterday's mist and rain, and there are still dragonflies, Red Admirals and Small Tortoiseshells.

But it is definitely autumn. Ask anybody who ran in the half-marathon yesterday - my word, they did get wet. Well done, the man in the crocodile suit, and well done, Mike Smithy Morris, late of the Life project, who we know is much more familiar with the course through the windscreen of a Land Rover. And well done everybody of the hundreds who took part - well over a thousand again, by my guesstimate. It's a fantastic sight as they stream across the dam, and a milestone of the Lake Vyrnwy year. Many congratulations to the organisers, and to the volunteers who man the water stations, direct the traffic and keep a careful eye open for everybody's well-being. And congratulations to the runners, too, for looking so happy while getting so wet!
