Have you ever wondered what creatures are lurking in the Lakenheath Fen ponds? Ever wanted to see our feathered friends up close? Ever wondered what’s flying about whilst you’re asleep? Ever wondered what mini-beasts you can find crawling around the reserve?
Well, Sunday 24th July will be your chance to do just that! Join us for our free summer family fun day and discover all of the above and more – there’ll be something for all the family, young and old, to enjoy.
We’ll be exploring the watery depths with a spot of pond dipping; a chance to find water scorpions, dragonfly larvae, water stick insects, whirligig beetles and more...

Throughout the day, there’ll be a bird ringing demonstration taking place in Brandon Fen, with local bird ringer Simon Evans. It’s an amazing opportunity to see well-loved birds like blue tits, goldfinches, chaffinches and great tits up close and discover how amazing they really are. Did you know a blue tit weighs about the same as a pound coin?!

Elephants, tigers, ghosts and kittens…we’ll be looking for them all and more in the moth trap put out the night before. Moths are amazing insects, in all shapes, sizes, colours and not to mention the fact they have some spectacular names!

Follow our nature quiz trail around Brandon Fen to discover fascinating facts about the birds that breed here at RSPB Lakenheath Fen. Now, what on earth could a ‘butter bump’ be?
It’s the time of year we’re seeing lots of young birds around, so we’ll be making fat ball seed feeders that you can put up in your garden at home and see what’s been nesting nearby.
And to top it all off, there’ll be a goody bag for every child that comes along! The event runs from 10am until 4pm, more information and details of where we are can be found here: https://www.rspb.org.uk/discoverandenjoynature/seenature/events/details.aspx?id=tcm:9-413452
See you on Sunday 24th July!
