Many of our visitors have been asking us when we will be hosting our guided walks again and we have now proudly put together an events programme for the next couple of months. Below are the details, with links to our booking website Eventbrite:

Thursday 27 May and Saturday 26 June: Get to Know Your Butterflies (11:00 to 13:00)

will be a guided walk of approximately two miles, taking in various butterfly hotspots along the way. Each year we record around twenty species on the reserve and most of these are on the wing by late May. This walk is suitable for everyone, from beginners who want to learn more about the common species, to more experienced observers who just want to come along and admire them! The event is weather-dependent and we may have to move the date if the forecast is wet and windy. Prices are £6 for RSPB members and £10 for non-RSPB members.

Thursday 8 July and Saturday 14 August: Get to Know Your Dragonflies (11:00 to 13:00)

This walk will follow the style of the butterfly walk listed above, in that it is suitable for all abilities and will be an interesting walk at a leisurely pace across the reserve, taking in the best spots to look for dragonflies and damselflies, at a time of year when we should see plenty of variety! It's ideal for those wanting to learn more, or just to admire them on a guided walk where attendees will have plenty of opportunities to ask questions. Booking is essential and can be done using the Eventbrite booking links below. Tickets are £6 for RSPB members and £10 for non-RSPB members- for non-members the entry price onto the reserve is included in the ticket cost.

Saturday 7 August: Summer 'Behind the Scenes' Walking Tour (13:00-18:00)

This is a wild and adventurous walk of approximately six miles, taking in the most remote parts of the reserve not normally open to the public. It is designed to give you a full tour of the reserve and we should see a superb range of wildlife, including hobbies, cranes, marsh harriers and possibly bearded tits. The reserve will also be full of buttterflies, dragonflies and warblers. There will be a friendly guide or two with you to answer any questions you may have. Please bring sun cream, snacks and plenty to drink for this one! Ticket prices are £16 for adults and £8 for children (RSPB members) ; £20 for adults and £10 for children (for non-RSPB members).

Sunday 19 September: The History of Lakenheath Fen (10:00 to 12:00)

This is a new event for us and is designed to guide visitors on a journey through the historical features of the reserve- there are many landmarks, objects and peculiarities which give signs of the past in the present day, such as what the reserve used to be before the first land purchase took place in 1995. Joining us for this walk should enrich your experience of the reserve and will probably mean a visit will never be quite the same again! There is a rich story to tell and we plan to do it on this date and at this time! Ticket prices are £6 for RSPB members and £10 for non-RSPB members.

As a footnote, we do also plan to host a Big Wild Sleepout this summer, and possibly a Race for Wildlife... watch this space!

For all of these events, please bring sturdy, comfortable, waterproof footwear, plenty to drink and snacks if you wish. At the start and end of each walk, there will be the opportunity to use the toilet facilities and order refreshments.

Thanks for reading and I hope these events have interested you! If you have any questions about any of our events, please get in touch on 01842 863400 or using lakenheath@rspb.org.uk
Best wishes,

Heidi Jones (Visitor Experience Officer, RSPB Lakenheath Fen).
