Good afternoon. Apologies for the lack of updates recently. I have been on holiday and the reserve team have been very busy over the last couple of weeks.
I will return with a more detailed recent sightings post over the next couple of days but in the meantime, here are some recent highlights:
Crane – Now likely to be off-site feeding with the Fens wintering crane flock.
Bittern – One from Joist Fen viewpoint on 2/10.
Bearded tit- Present in reasonable numbers.
Great white egret- One seen from Joist Fen viewpoint on 3/10.
Spoonbill- Four from the Washland viewpoint on 22/9.
Kingfisher- One from the visitor centre window on 3/10.
Hobby- Two from Joist Fen viewpoint on 3/10.
Gannet- One flew over the Washland viewpoint on 2/10.
Ruff: Three from the Washland viewpoint on 26/9.
Ringed plover- Seven from the Washland viewpoint on 3/10.
Grey wagtail- One flew over the Washland viewpoint on 22/9.
Common sandpiper- One from the Washland viewpoint on 3/10.
Black tailed godwit- Three from the Washland viewpoint on 2/10.
Yellow legged gull- One from the Washland viewpoint on 2/10.
If you are planning to visit the reserve, please note that the cattle are due to be moved off of the riverbank Public Footpath on Thursday 4 October.
