Good morning. October has begun in typical autumnal fashion so here are some more recent sightings:
I went and had a look over the washland on Sunday morning and saw the following:
A chiffchaff was singing in Brandon Fen and a great white egret appeared on the washland shortly after I got back to the visitor centre. As the morning went on, three garganeys were found on the washland and a peregrine was reported over West Wood. Two hobbys were feeding over the visitor centre in the afternoon and volunteer Sebastian saw a bittern in flight from Joist Fen viewpoint.
It was pretty quiet on Monday morning but I did see two little egrets near the reserve entrance. A marsh tit was on the visitor centre feeders and as the day went on, the following waders were on the washland:
Volunteer Roy spotted two common lizards near the visitor centre and Suzanne saw a bittern land on the washland. A common buzzard was also circling over the car park.
The main focus of attention yesterday was waders and here are the maximum counts for the day:
Local birder Steve also saw a hobby over East Wood.
It was pretty chilly this morning but I saw the following nonetheless:
When I got back to the visitor centre, a kingfisher was fishing at the edge of the visitor centre pond. I also took these photos of the fungi that is currently growing near the visitor centre:
