Good morning. We are now in to another month so here are some more recent sightings.

I will begin though with a photograph from last Saturday. This is the juvenile nightingale that was feeding near the visitor centre in the morning:

Thank you very much to Ian and Kathleen for sharing this wonderful image with us.

I will start off where I left off with some sightings from Sunday. A kingfisher was feeding at the edge of the visitor centre pond in the afternoon and presumably the same juvenile common redstart from Saturday made a brief appearance at the edge of the car park at lunchtime. Volunteer Paul also saw three little ringed plovers on the washland.

On Monday, Suzanne saw a green woodpecker around Brandon Fen. She also saw a common buzzard flying overhead.

On Tuesday, local birder Ian saw 13 black tailed godwits and four garganeys up on the washland. He also heard a grasshopper warbler reeling between the visitor centre and East Wood.

Warden Emma led a very well attended "Marvellous moths and beautiful butterflies" session of family activities yesterday morning. I have attached the moth and butterfly list to this blog post if you are interested.

If you are interested in moths, you may be interested to know that that we have a moth night on Friday 25 August. Please follow this link for more information.

I went out on the reserve armed with my camera this morning and took some more photos of the fungi that is currently growing in Brandon Fen. I hope you like them:

I saw at least one goldcrest at the edge of the car park and the juvenile green woodpecker was feeding in the sandy area in the middle of Brandon Fen. There were also at least 400 lapwings on the washland.

I am due to the leading the: "A celebration of summer" long distance walk around the reserve on Saturday so hopefully, by Sunday, I will have some sightings from the far end of the reserve!

If you are planning to visit the reserve, please note that there are still cattle grazing on the riverbank Public Footpath between the Washland viewpoint and Joist Fen viewpoint.

We hope to see you soon!
