Good morning. Apologies for the lack of updates recently, I haven’t been here much.

I went for a walk before work on Tuesday morning and saw a roe deer in Brandon Fen. A male banded demoiselle and an azure damselfly were also on the wing in the morning sunshine.

As the morning went on, a kingfisher was fishing at the edge of the visitor centre pond and a bittern was showing well from Mere Hide. A common sandpiper was also seen from the hide.

Meanwhile, further down the reserve, two cranes were seen from Joist Fen viewpoint and a green sandpiper also flew over the viewpoint. Three garganeys (two drakes and a duck) were seen from the Washland viewpoint and a brown argus butterfly was also on the wing in Brandon Fen.

On Thursday, two kingfishers were fishing at the edge of the visitor centre pond. A group of eight black terns spent a short period of time feeding in front of the Washland viewpoint and Suzanne saw two cuckoos in Brandon Fen.

On Friday, two black terns were over the washland in the evening. On Saturday, two cuckoos were seen over the visitor centre pond and a kingfisher was also showing in the same area.

My dad and I came down for a walk early on Sunday morning. We saw a hobby and a kingfisher from Joist Fen viewpoint and a male pochard from New Fen viewpoint. I also took a couple of pictures in the sunshine:

A honey buzzard flew over Joist Fen viewpoint in the afternoon. Please follow this link to see a photograph of it.

I walked down to New Fen viewpoint yesterday morning and had brief views of a singing grasshopper warbler near the Washland viewpoint on the way down. A kingfisher flew in to East Wood and this impressive drinker moth caterpillar was feeding behind New Fen viewpoint:

As the day went on, a bittern was showing from Mere Hide and a jay was showing well on the visitor centre lawn. Two cranes were reported in flight from New Fen viewpoint and a male garganey was seen on the river north of West Wood.

I went for a walk around Brandon Fen before work this morning. A male garganey and two shelducks were showing from the Washland viewpoint. A cuckoo was showing well near the visitor centre and a kingfisher was fishing at the edge of the visitor centre pond.

If you are interested in an evening guided walk around the reserve this week, there are still plenty of spaces available on our Evening Exploration guided walk on Friday 1 June 7pm-10pm. Please follow this link to find out how to book your place on this walk.

We hope to see you soon!
