WeBS counts (a long running monthly national survey for waterbirds) on The Oa are generally fairly quiet with just a couple of nutrient poor inland lochs counted. Today's count was a bit more interesting than usual, with good numbers of Greenland white-fronted and barnacle geese, 90 teal, 83 herring gulls, 4 goldeneye, 19 tufted duck, wigeon, and grey heron. Sparrowhawk and hen harrier were also seen. On the sea at Port Ellen great northern and red-throated divers, razorbills, shags and black guillemots were counted.
