History has given us some titanic struggles between fierce rivals. Borg vs McEnroe. Scott vs Amundsen. Erm, Quality Street vs Roses. On a windy Friday night in Port Ellen, the biggest of all was to be decided. Loch Gruinart vs The Oa in a battle for Islay Hotel Rudolph Fund Pub Quiz Championship of the World.

Who would seize the moment and walk away with the £50 voucher and heads held high? Who would slink away into the dark, tails between their legs, hopeless and forgotten? Who would claim the title of Islay's Cleverest Reserve?

It was a battle for the ages. In the red corner, Team Gruinart, home of the 30,000 geese and the flashy visitor facilities including public toilets and two types of coffee in the vending machine. Much beloved by BBC film crews. In the blue corner, the underdogs from The Oa, home of the mighty Golden Eagle, stunning sea cliffs and a car park with a bumpy track. Team Gruinart, with their one man advantage, jumped out to an early lead and looked to be the team to beat as they sailed through the early rounds displaying their superior knowledge of all things Dad's Army and archery related. But Team Oa rallied, refusing to be beaten. They clawed back points in the colours round and by the time the films round had finished, they had a commanding 3 point lead, with only the picture round to go. Could the wily mountain goats from The Oa hang on? Or would the Gruinart Empire crush them with the sheer weight of their goose droppings? Well, hang on they did, with strong efforts from Evans and Wood sealing a famous victory and triggering wild celebrations that lasted until nearly 10pm before everyone had to drive home. A great night. But I guess the main winner was this https://www.facebook.com/IslayRudolphFund
