They say the sun shines on the righteous. In which case someone in the farm team at Loch Gruinart has been a very naughty boy, as it's done very little except rain since silage cutting began over a week ago.
A brutal combination of mechanical failure and continual rain has drawn out the process and left the fields looking distinctly, erm, sub-optimal.
Elsewhere around Loch Gruinart today, in and amongst some beautifully fresh peacock and red admiral butterflies, I saw a Tachina grossa. This huge, distinctive fly is one of largest flies in Europe, easily the size of most queen bumblebees.
