We have kept out a mammal raft over winter to monitor use of our many ditches on the reserves. This is a non-intrusive method using the animals own natural curiosity - the floating raft has a tunnel with a tray inside with a clay top; any animals walking through will leave their footprints behind for us to check and id. We use our trail camera's alongside this. We have had many animals appear along the banking (geese, hare, deer) but so far only one has used the tunnel - a young moorhen. Our territorial otters have been very keen on this new marking post we have provided! I don't seem to be able to upload videos, but here are a couple of grainy pictures of the otter - always lovely to see whatever the picture quality!
