On a beautiful sunny day last Wednesday the 23rd July we welcomed many local and visiting families to our Family Fun Day at Loch Gruinart.

With its theme of 'Bugs and Butterflies' there was plenty to see and do, starting with pond dipping with our Senior Site Manager James! Lots of interesting pond life was found, and we even had an underwater microphone so we could hear what it was like down there.

Visitors then followed our Woodland Trail!

Here they enjoyed a variety of fun activities - the Butterfly Challenge to see how many butterflies they could identify, a Noughts and Crosses game with pebbles coloured as Native or Harlequin Ladybirds, some Deadwood Delights to see what bugs they could identify in dead wood, an Arts and Crafts gazebo to paint and decorate bug pebbles, and finally, making Bug Bungalows and a big Bug Hotel!

At each activity visitors could find the answer to a question on their activity sheet and a secret pebble with a letter on it, which at the end of the challenge spelled out a secret word. So then it was back to the Visitor Centre for making Bug Biscuits (although some were shaped like ducks too) and to look at the moths we'd found in our overnight moth trap, as well as a variety of minibeasts too.

It was a fantastic day, and well done to Heather for devising it, organizing it all and making it run so smoothly! Thanks to Dave W for the photos, and to everyone involved.
