The RSPB West Cumbria Local Group is 25 years old this year and as part of their celebrations they are hosting an open day at RSPB Hodbarrow nature reserve, on Saturday 11 June from 10.30 am to 3.30 pm.
This special event is a great chance for locals and visitors to take in the wonderful atmosphere and to meet friendly local RSPB volunteers and staff. A walk around the reserve meanders through wildflower-filled grasslands, takes in the stunning coastline and skirts around their impressive lagoon.
RSPB volunteers will be on hand with telescopes around the reserve to show off the birds. It is an ideal time of year to watch the graceful great crested grebes swimming on the water and to enjoy the excitement of the chattering terns nesting on the islands nearby. Wildlife is all around, with pretty bee orchids in flower and lots of butterflies flutter around in the sun.
