Hodbarrow is fun for all the family. There is not only great wildlife but lovely walks for everyone to enjoy.

Starting at the carpark have a look at the information board to help you find where to go and some of the sights you might see whilst you're getting there.

Harry and Suzanne spot something near the reserve sign

Use our new rolled stone paths to start your walk alongside the large open water lagoon where you could get a glimpse of Mute Swans, Tufted Ducks, Mallard or Little Egret. The paths are wheelchair, pushchair and bike friendly for all ages.

Harry stops to admire the view

Wander on through open grassland where you get lovely views of Black Combe and the first glimpses of Hodbarrow''s iron ore mining history. Most notably the birght red iron rich soils and the old sea wall. In the summer there is a carpet of orchids to stop and admire. In Autumn and Winter the beautiful colours and a dusting of snow on the fells completes this amazing view.

The reserve is free to visit and is always open throughout the year.

Josh and Harry explore!

Walk towards the estuary and you are welcomed with stunning views over to the Coniston Fells and the Barrow Penninsular. We have a well placed picnic bench and a bench here to rest a while and enjoy some lunch. When the views are this lovely it's hard not to stop and look. In the summer you might get a glimpse of Terns and Gannets feeding on the currents and in winter oystercatchers and Curlews probe the mud for food.

The beach here is secluded and sheltered. Families can have picnics, build sandcastle and enjoy this local hidden gem.

Off to explore the beach

You can do a circular route around the lagoon which takes about 1-2 hours walking. On the way around you could nip into the hide where in summer rare Little Terns nest and in the winter large flocks of ducks and waders roost on the island.
