Maintenance work is still happening outside the hide at Greylake as the new predator fence is extended to protect all fields directly in view of the hide. It's job will be to protect ground nesting birds from predators such as foxes, and come the spring it will bring great benefit to the ground breeding birds; in particular the lapwing for which Greylake has become so notable for. Greylake is in fact one of the most important sites in the South West for breeding lapwing!!! Unfortunately however, the work has lead to some disturbance of wildlife around the hide for the time being, and because of this on the busier days birds may be harder to see from this point. Inspite of delays caused by the weather we are trying to finish work as soon as possible.........
..................BUT..........
.......................................... there is still lots to see at Greylake particularly around the Reedbed Loop and on towards the willow viewing screen............................
Today at the carpark and from the viewing platform pied wagtail, goldfinches, long-tailed tits, starling, great tits, and blue tits could all be spotted, to name but a few. Large numbers of reed bunting were moving about in the reed bed, flying across the path from and into the nearby fields where crops have been left for bird food. In amongst the reed bunting was also the occasional Brambling. Then, continuing out towards the willow screen over fields on the left lapwing, starlings, golden plover, and fieldfare could all be seen really clearly and in good numbers, either on the ground or, every so often, scared up in large flocks moving together as a single unit in magnificent shapes and swirls!!!
