We opened up the trails and hides yesterday, for the first time this year. There are a few places that need to be negotiated in single file but otherwise its business as usual....at long last!

The staff and volunteers have worked really hard to enable the opening of the reserve so a big thank you goes out to all of them.

With the lovely sunshine but a strong cool wind, it was lovely to sit in the comfort of the hide, watching the wildlife and chat to the human visitors yesterday. It is always a pleasure to see some familiar faces!

Our Assistant warden had carried out her monthly WeBS count earlier that morning and seen 6 Black-tailed Godwits from the hide. Unfortunately, by the time I arrived having had to drive all the way round via Nythe Road instead of the more direct route from West Sedgemoor though Burrowbridge in my car, I’d missed them.

I was rewarded however, with displaying Lapwings and Redshanks making the most of the early spring sunshine.

There was also plenty of Teal, Wigeon, Shoveler and Mallard around together with several Coot. Seven Little Egrets, six Buzzards, Three Marsh Harrier and two Curlew were also seen from the hide during the day.

A single chiffchaff was again by the Information Trailer. Lets hope that it finds a mate soon.
