“Sunday was spectacular this weekend at Greylake. Saturday’s strong winds had softened and the birds were taking full advantage. At times the sky was literally full with thousands of lapwing, duck and starling. As well as being a stunning bird, Greylake’s visiting peregrine falcons are great at scaring the visiting duck and waders into the sky, allowing those watching to truly appreciate the number of birds present.

There were also huge numbers of starling behind the flooded fields that flew off, toward their roost at Shapwick Heath, in wonderful formations as the light faded.

Quieter in numbers of birds, though not in terms of the weather, on Saturday morning we were lucky enough to see a pair of peregrine’s mating and a stunning female merlin paid a visit around lunchtime. It is always worth taking the time to scan the gates, fences and tree stumps as these are the favourite vantage points for birds of prey.

Yesterday, (Tuesday) 3 adult bewick's swans together with 4 juveniles flew into the field infront of the hide from the far end of the reserve -  Fantastic!

Throughout the remainder of February we will be at Greylake every weekend. Come and join us to make the very most of our winter visitors before they begin their journey to their breeding grounds.”
