Today is the launch of the RSPBs biggest ever campaign called Giving Nature a Home. The RSPB think big and build homes for nature on a large scale all across the country but by making small changes you can build a home for nature where you live. Simple things like having a patch of longer grass in your garden or growing flowering plants can make a big difference.
Here at Frampton Marsh we have our very own wildlife garden with lots of flowering plants, a dead wood pile and long grass along with many other features which make it great for wildlife. If you’ve been to the reserve before, you’ve probably noticed our pond which is another feature you could have in your garden.
It was created in October 2011 with the pond dipping platform going in in March 2012. Previously this area was a natural depression that collected water, I guess kind of like a big puddle. We decided we wanted a pond as an extension of our wildlife garden and now it is home to all sorts of creatures including newts, water boatman, bloodworms, stickleback and freshwater shrimp. It just shows that a little hard work can really pay off.
