Well last week saw the last sessions of bug hunting and pond dipping for the summer. We’ve been running them through the summer holidays on Thursdays and Fridays and they’ve proved very popular. It’s been great seeing the kids get really involved in learning about nature and the parents definitely have enjoyed it too.

We’ve had some great finds over the weeks with one of the highlights being a diving beetle that was an inch long! In the pond we’ve been regularly catching freshwater shrimp, bloodworms, water boatman, stickleback, various nymphs, whirligig beetles and pond snails. During our bug hunts we’ve had spiders, ladybirds, grasshoppers, caterpillars, aphids and shield beetles. I’ve really enjoyed working with all the families and the weather has certainly cooperated for much of the summer.

A grasshopper and a water boatman, both of which we found during our sessions!

Although our sessions have now finished we still have the pond dipping equipment available to hire from the visitor centre for self-guided pond dipping. Feel free to come along and have a go!
