What's around?

It's been an unusual week on the reserve, with the funny weather bringing in birds we haven't seen for a while.

Here are the highlights:


Kingfisher infront of hide (at Freiston Shore) - Paul Sullivan.

Kingfisher - 1 individual seen around the dykes near the east hide on Mon, Tues, and Wed, and 2 seen there today!
Goldcrest - 1 or 2 indivuduals seen int he hedgerow most days this week
Green woodpecker - seen in the hedgerow on Mon and Tues.
Little stint - at least 1 seen everyday and a peak count of 5 on Wed.
Pintail - 8 seen on the scrapes this afternoon
Spotted redshank - showing well infront of the 360 hide this afternoon
Ringed plover - 12 seen together on the scrapes this afternoon
Merlin - seen hunting over the wet grassland and scrapes every day this week
Fieldfare - many flying over (50+) and small groups seen on the sea bank and in the hedgerow
Whimbrel - seen on the scrapes this morning
Brent geese - more arriving and showing well all over the reserve. 1000+

Friday
Sunny and crisp for most of the day with the risk of showers later in the afternoon. Moderate/strong northerly winds will make it feel pretty chilly. Max temp. of 8 degrees
Saturday
Stronger winds (up to 17mph) and some rain in the morning but sunnier spells in the afternoon. Max temp. of 7 degrees.
Sunday
Slightly warmer but slightly wetter on Sunday, with the risk of showers throughout the day. Max temp. of 9 degrees and winds between 9 and 13mph from the west.
