No, we're not about to pave paradise and put up a parking lot. Joni Mitchell wrote the song Big Yellow Taxi (later covered by Bob Dylan, Amy Grant, Counting Crows and many others) which included that line. In fact, something of an environmentalist song. There are references to DDT and the only place where people can see nature is in specially controlled areas. But this isn't about a taxi, this is about a digger.
Currently we have some building works going on. This week they will be on the sea wall, between East Hide and the old car park. Hardcore is being put on top of the bank and compacted into the ground. This will improve the surface, so hopefully it won't get so muddy and churned up by the cows in the winter and will provide a smoother surface in the summer. Therefore it should be easier with people with limited mobility to access that part of the site.
Obviously, whilst this is going on there will be some disturbance. The path along the sea bank will remain open, but if you are going to walk along it, do please take care and follow any warning notices. The work is expected to last until the end of the week.
Starting next week, another digger will be on North Scrape, doing some work to reprofile the scrape. By adding new channels and islands, it is hoped we can improve it's appeal for breeding waders and terns. Again, during this time there is bound to be some disruption.
