We have to cut the reeds in our ditches periodically to stop them getting clogged up, and several species of water birds benefit as a consequence. The number of pairs of little grebes always increases after the cutting has been done, and there are often more coots. I think tufted ducks would also benefit, although they are not regular breeders here (yet), and it gives bitterns more fishing opportunities.
We use a specialist weed cutting machine called a Truxor, which is a sort of landing craft with a wide cutter bar on the front (http://www.aquaclearwatermanagement.com/). This is the time of year when many of our wetland reserves need to do this type of work, and the contractors have to work flat out to meet the demand. Therefore the machines will be at Fowlmere on Saturday and Sunday 23/24 January. There may be some disturbance to the ducks on the mere, but obviously we will try to keep it to a minimum.
I am sorry if this spoils anyone's visit, but it is essential work.
