Fowlmere continues to live up to its developing reputation as one of the best places in Britain to see turtle doves. The distinctive purring of the males (and to a lesser extent the females also) is not being heard as often as it was earlier in the season, but you would still be very unlucky not to hear one if you visited in the morning or the evening. Matt Mellor has posted a short video clip of one on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j1EiTqs-fQQ. I saw a pair nest building last week, so I suspect there are several birds on eggs at the moment.

The most exciting event so far this week is the fledging of a third young marsh harrier. These juveniles spend much of their time sitting on bushes between Drewer Hide and Reedbed Hide, and can often be seen from either. You can find some recent photos of them and other birds on the Cambridgeshire Bird Club website http://cambsbirdclub.blogspot.co.uk/.
