The peatland restoration work in the Dyke plantation is on a vast scale. Non-native conifers must first be removed before hydrological restoration can begin. Normally forestry/woodland is a valuable habitat but here in the Flow Country the peatlands are richer in biodiversity that these non-native plantations and they also store far more carbon, locked away in the peat, than the trees do.
