Exciting new opportunity at RSPB Forsinard Flows

RSPB Forsinard is the RSPB’s largest reserve...and we love to share the experience of this fascinating and vast peatland with as many visitors and volunteers as possible...but we have a problem...we are also fairly remote, just 15 miles south from the very top of the British mainland!

But never fear...we have an exciting solution... New for 2017, we are offering ‘Friends and Family volunteering’ at Forsinard, week-long group volunteering, staying in our brand new field centre in the heart of the peatlands.  This would give you the opportunity to not only experience the habitat and contribute to its conservation but share it with others – perhaps a group of friends or some adult members of your family(over 18s only)?  Maybe your Uni Conservation Society for a project week, or your workmates for a team building exercise? Or even a group of your cousins for a new experience in the great outdoors?  Either book as a group with folk you already know or as an individual and see who you meet?

You would get involved in the conservation and restoration of this peatland reserve, which is important not only for its wildlife, but also for the role that it can play in combating climate change; as a carbon store.

This is an amazing habitat that will have many treats in store in August and September –

  • Red deer are often visible across the reserve as they gather ready for the annual rut
  • Dragonflies will be busy over the pools and lochs as they try to ensure that they have had a successful breeding season before the first frosts
  • The sphagnum and other bog vegetation will treat you to a colourful autumnal display unlike any other.

The weeks will involve a mixture of practical management, surveying and monitoring, enabling you to get a real taste of peatland conservation and the enchanting remoteness of the far north of Scotland.

We will provide relevant informal training in different ecological survey and monitoring techniques, navigation and hill skills. You will stay in our brand new Field Centre bunkrooms right on the reserve, surrounded by fantastic wildlife, and only five minutes walk from Forsinard train station which is also the reserve visitor centre.
