June is usually a fairly quiet time for birds at the lakes, but there are still nice things to see. One of my favourite sights at the moment are the common tern chicks on our tern rafts (you can see these from the hide at Moore Lake, the viewpoint by the main car park and from the riverbank footpath at Ferry Lagoon). Most of the rafts now have a few fluffy chicks with other adults still incubating their eggs. I like to see and hear the commotion when an adult brings a fish in, with the sitting birds and the greedy little chicks all yelling and vying for attention. The geese also seem to have had a good season, with large numbers of greylags and Canadas on Ferry Lagoon in particular. See if you can spot a few Egyptian geese amongst them.

Aside from the birds, the flowers are also fairly stunning at the moment, with lovely displays of poppies and ox-eye daisies along some of the banks. If you can find a great mullein (tall spike of yellow flowers), have a closer look for the caterpillars of the mullein moth. They are white with yellow and black spots - much more colourful than the adults will be!

Access update - the only remaining floodwater is on the south side of Ferry Lagoon around the pond dipping platform, although other paths may be wet and muddy in places.
