Flood water is starting to drain off again and the car parks are now open. Some paths are still flooded, particularly around Moore Lake, Drayton Lagoon and Ferry Lagoon, and most of the rest are wet and muddy. Let’s hope summer arrives next week...
I could not easily get from Swavesey to Covell's Drain this morning without using the busway. I did manage to get down to the river and along the bank to Holywell Road without seeing any cattle. The footpath was very hard going in places and ideally required boots to progress safely and with dry feet.
The last time I visited, cattle had been driven across to the west of Covell's Drain and were strung out along the footpath by the river. I will not willingly walk through cattle and I know I am not alone in this. From my point of view, effective access to a large part of the reserve has been blocked. A lot of work has been carried out to make the reserve more accessible but the presence of these cattle is hardly compatible with this aim. The footpaths have been chewed up by their hooves, but at least the verdure has been fertilised.
