Lin Dyke 22nd June

Green Woodpecker was showing in the scrub down Lin Dyke this morning and the Cuckoo was still calling.

On the Flash in front of the hide was a Blacktailed Godwit, Ringed Plover, Lapwings and plenty of Redshanks including a family party.

65+ Gadwall in various eclipse plumage were also present and an eclipse Shoveler was right in front of the hide.

  • Thanks for the sightings Rob! Do you come to the reserve every day? You'll have to pop in and say hi to us at the visitor centre, don't think we've met you before!

  • Hi Laura

I try and visit most weekdays, occasionally straying to Swillington or Wheldrake etc, but it tends to be early morning down Lin Dyke or evening time and more often than not the Centre is shut. I tend to stray further afield at the weekend - however if you are open when I come down I will pop in. I have been visiting fairburn for the best part of 40 years - I am 43 so thats most of my life and would occasionally help the Warden back in the 1970's and my dad played a large part in the establishment of the reserve as part of the Leeds and District Birdwatchers Club so the reserve holds a special place for me - plus the cracking birds that can be seen!

    Regards Rob

  • Hi Rob,

Of course that would explain why we've never crossed paths if you're here doing a spot of early morning/late evening birdwatching! I'm really pleased that you're sharing your sightings on here as we have very few people who are able to report what's on the reserve at these times! Wow, you've been coming here since you were 3- that's fab! Glad to hear the birds are still up to scratch too! We've had some really great wildlife over the past few months including the redstarts, turtle doves, spoonbills, white letter hairstreak butterfly and the common crane- it's been a mental time really!
