A wet and grey Sunday here at Fairburn Ings but by no means dreary, the wildlife garden and feeders to the side of the Visitor centre have drawn in a host of birds these last few days including bullfinch, chaffinch, greenfinch and goldfinch, willow tit, blue tit, great tit, coal tit and long-tailed tits, great spotted woodpecker, siskin, brambling, song thrush, blackbird, reed bunting, nuthatch, treecreeper, pheasant and of course tree sparrows.

We have recently begun a programme of ringing our tree sparrows at Fairburn Ings along with others that fly into the mist nets, such as this gorgeous goldcrest photographed below. to allow us to monitor their progress, we will be asking our visitors to help out by keeping an eye out for ringed tree sparrows and if possible recording and reporting the letters on their rings, but will inform you more about that shortly.

We have also had marsh harrier, brambling, goosander, shelduck, siskin and great spotted woodpecker seen around Pickup hide and on Spoonbill Flash there has been curlew, pink-footed geese, little egret and a female smew.

If you are visiting Fairburn Ings, don’t forget to pop into the visitor centre and tell us about your sightings, we are always interested to here what is around and share your information.
