This morning we were treated to a pair of Little Owls perched on the fence near the visitors centre along Newton Lane. This appears to be a favourite spot for the Owls with weekly sightings being reported. From Pick Up hide a Hobby was spotted as well as a Common Sandpiper. Down at Lin Dike hide today there are Redshank feeding along the waters edge, Lapwing and juvenile Lapwing, a Little Ringed Plover and the rest of the usual suspects. From the Cut hide you can see Gadwall, Pochard, Great Crested Grebes, Shovlers, Tufted ducks and more.
The end of last week and the beginning of this saw a visit from a Spotted Flycatcher. Sightings of this gorgeous bird are far and few between at Fairburn Ings and it is always a welcomed visitor. It was seen near the centre on two occasions and the third was from the kingfisher screen where I was able to see it perform its hunting technique of flying from a favourite perch, catching a fly and then returning to the same spot... Magic!
