I love new Spring beginnings, cleaning out the house, dusting, organising and making room for fresh flowers on the windowsill.
It's a chance to appreciate nature's first signs of hard work. And celebrate the new season of colour in our gardens and communities.
Last week all over the country we showed support for nature and the RSPB with the Show the Love campaign, but why not continue that all year round with these flag banners to hang at home, work or a mini one on the fridge!

I made these banners NO-SEW so they can be easily constructed in bulk and decorated with the kids.

YOU WILL NEED

  • Some plain cotton or canvas fabric
  • Bamboo rods or twigs from the garden
  • Paper or card to make a stencil
  • Fabric or acrylic paint
  • Fabric glue
  • Trims, pom-poms, buttons or anything else exciting or wacky for decoration
  • Wool, ribbon or wire for hanging

Start by making a 16CM square stencil out of your paper or card. From the mid-line in the square you can draw out the pointed end measuring 7CM in length. I did the same technique for the smaller banner, a 7CM square with a 3CM length point.

Lay your stencil out onto the fabric and draw around the edge with pencil. Flip the stencil lengthways and draw around again so you have a long banner shape that can be doubled over the stick. Cut out and lay flat.

At this point you'll want to do the fun part of painting, lettering and decorating. Make sure you lay some paper beneath your fabric (as I learnt the hard way and got paint all over the kitchen table)
I had some rubber letter stamps available, which are great for neat wording, but i also used free hand lettering, bird painting and even decorated one with a crocheted green heart to 'Show the love'!

When you've decorated the main body of the banner sporting a RSPB campaign slogan or your own shout-out for nature, you can stick it together.
The bamboo dowelling or sticks want to placed in the centre of the unfolded banner and be roughly 19cm in width so there's room on either side for hanging.
Spread some glue all along the edges, fold and stick!

With the banners glued into place you can now add trimmings or edgings to finish off. I did a blanket stitch of embroidery thread around my mini flags to make them stand out.

Tie wire, wool, ribbon or string around the sticks and hang somewhere as a daily reminder to show love and support for nature all year long!

Thanks for reading, making and supporting with nature
