Lesley is one of our Wednesday Reserve Assistants at Fairburn Ings and is very enthusiast about the team “We are a friendly group of usually 6 who work well together. We even have a WhatsApp group chat called ‘Wot’s ‘Appning Wednesday’ where we keep in touch with each other with photos of the work we are doing on the reserve. I didn’t know what I would be doing when I started volunteering but I knew I wanted to work mostly outside on the reserve. And it didn’t disappoint! We mend fences, build paths, plant reeds, fix nest boxes and just about any other maintenance job. The wardens have a long list of things that need to be done. I am always learning some new skill and have had brushcutting training”.

Lesley has always been into bird watching and is now a committed volunteer “When I retired I wanted to help the RSPB protect and also educate people about our fantastic wildlife. I make the long journey from Sheffield not only because Fairburn Ings is a wonderfully diverse habitat for wildlife but also the variety of tasks we perform, the company of the team and the wardens make it a very enjoyable day”.
