Here's a blog from our wildlife garden volunteers Teresa and Louise
Well hello,
You may have noticed we were out in force (pond force actually) re-landscaping the pond recently.... this allowed us to improve the structure and look after this valuable water source. Introducing water to your garden is one of the most important things you can do for nature. Obviously the bigger the better in some respects but even the smallest amount of water will soon become a thriving eco system in its own right. as well as offering a crucial drinking and bathing resource for your other wildlife visitors
.
Its always best to invest in a good quality liner for the pond, Butyl is one of the best, for durability. Also remember to make sure there are different levels in the pond to allow a variety of species and plants to be able to benefit from it. The insects and amphibians will find their own way there, it is always best to NOT introduce them from other ponds. This really contributes to the spread of disease.
In regards to plants, it really is best to stick to native species, in particular avoid those nasty invasive ones that are currently causing so many problems in our waterways. Examples of safe and native plants are: Marginals - Marsh Marigolds and Purple Loosestrife, Oxygenators which will keep your pond clear- Good ones include Hornwort, and Frogbit.
As always please ask us if any advice is needed, or indeed a query - we will welcome any!
Make use of these dark cold nights, to think and plan your garden for the coming year ahead. What ingredients are missing? What could you add for your wildlife? Is there any wildlife you havent provided a home for? Remember the key staples are food, water and shelter.
Finally Christmas time is almost upon us and as you are decorating in the home, why not think of natures home. Decorating your garden withy tasty tit-bits will be greatly appreciated, such as Monkey-Nuts, Apples and Fat balls. Better still make sure your garden contains shrubs and trees that give berries at this time of year.
We would like to take this opportunity to wish you a happy and healthy Christmas and New Year. When thinking of ideas for presents, our RSPB shop at Fairburn Ings, allows great inspiration and a gift membership would be perfect for anyone.
See you soon
