The pair of coots that have been active on the boardwalk all week have started to build their floating nest out of dead reeds and other vegetation. Coots can become very noisy and aggresive when nesting and it will be interesting to watch for any interesting behaviour in the next couple of weeks. It is great that these birds dont seem to mind human activity so close by and nest in full view of the pathways.
There have been reports of great crested grebes starting their courtship display on main bay, this is another brilliant spring spectacle to watch and no matter how many times I have witnessed it I am always amazed. Buzzards are very active at the momment and up to six have been seen circling above the visitor centre. Other raptors seen over the weekend was a peregrine at Lin Dyke and a red kite flying over Newfield plantation. The kingfishers were very obliging to visitors over the weekend and one family went away happy after seeing one for the first time after atleast a dozen visits. A grey wagtail was seen from Pickup hide this morning and female blackcap was seen near the visitor centre feeders. A female smew was seen at the pylon pool on Monday afternoon.
Bats are still being seen flying around during the day and even more are emerging at dusk when I have been closing the carpark.
