Fairburn Ings is a fantastic place to see all manner of different species of Damselflies and Dragonflies this summer. From around late May right up until September or October time (depending on the weather) there are many opportunities to see the great array that we have living here at the reserve.

The Damselfly species that you are likely to see are the Emerald, Large Red, Azure, Common Blue and Blue Tailed. As for the Dragonfly species that we have you are likely to encounter a Migrant Hawker, Brown Hawker, Emperor, Four Spotted Chaser, Broad Bodied Chaser, Black Tailed Skimmer, Common Darter and a Ruddy Darter.

So there are lots to go and identify for yourselves at the reserve. A walk around the boardwalk will not disappoint and at the pond dipping platforms you can explore the mini creatures that live within the habitat. The Damselfly and Dragonfly nymphs live in these ponds all year round and seeing them close up is fascinating.

If you wish to improve your i.d skills when it comes to Dragonflies and other flying mini beasts then there are two brilliant events coming up at Fairburn Ings. The first is the 'Butterfly & Dragonfly Walk' which is on Sunday 25th July. There are two walks, the first starting at 11am and the second at 1.30pm and they last between 1 and 2 hours. The second event is the 'Minibeast Safari Butterfly & Dragonfly Special' which is on Sunday 29th August. This also has two walks starting at 11am and 1.30pm, lasting between 1 and 2 hours. Both events are free but we advise booking a place to avoid any disappointment. So come and enjoy the exciting world of insects!
