Whilst we were enjoying the festive season, (most probably staying cosy in our homes, under a blanket and feeling stuffed but saying ‘go on then it’s Christmas’ and helping ourselves to another mince pie) nature outside of our warm brick buildings are living the life and death battle every day.
As we feasted on turkeys (or vegetarian alternatives) this Christmas, our wildlife is hunting and being hunted. These photographs were taken by regular visitor Graham Parry and it shows the struggle between three different species of animal.
A stoat chasing a rabbit, chosen for a meal.
Stoat having caught and killed the rabbit is now being mobbed by crows who want to steal its dinner.
After being pecked and pulled at for two long, the stoat gives up his dinner after only a few mouthfuls. The stoat looks on longingly, what wasted energy.
It is also important as we reflect back on the year, to think about what we did to improve our countryside, towns, homes and gardens for wildlife. Can’t think of anything? Well it’s not too late to do it now or create a brilliant New Year's Resolution for 2019!
Purchase your bird feeders and seed (we have some great offers in our shop which you can check out here), buy your wildflower seeds ready to plant in the spring for the butterflies and bees, pick up litter as you walk your dog around your street, local park or beach.
Get involved with volunteering (we’re hiring!) at your local nature reserve, sign a petition to improve our country for wildlife or join a fantastic nature conservation charity who strives to achieve a better space for people and wildlife to live together.
Or take part in the largest citizen science project in the world - our annual Big Garden Birdwatch. This year it is our 40th anniversary and we want it to be bigger than ever! Sign up for your free pack today.
Thanks in advance for making 2019 the best year you can for wildlife!
Happy New Year!
