Take a look at this rather handsome looking hoverfly, found at Binn Green last week - the white band across the abdomen and the black wing patches are really quite something !
It's Leucozona lucorum, a common hoverfly throughout the UK, not to be confused with the similar species Volucella pellucens. And if you're wondering how you tell the difference between them Leucozona has an obvious yellow-orange scutellum whilst Volucella's is black. It can be seen from May through to around August, peaking in June - look out for it sunning itself on vegetation.
Thanks to Mandy and Ken for finding and id'ing - gearing up for the BioBlitz ?!
