Hello again, I'm afraid that I don't have the sightings from the the book at Old Moor, but I do have sightings from a few satellite sites via Twitter.
UPDATE: Old Moor this eve via the Barnsley Birders (@BarnsleyBSG) - 1 med gull, 3 little egret, 3 adult bitterns with 4 juvs (fantastic) 21 teal, 1 wigeon, 1 pochard, 2 ringed plover, 5 oystercatcher and 6 redshank.
So off I go...
John Clarkson was around the Edderthorpe area and gave us the following sightings, a green sandpiper, 2 ringed plover, 13 little egret, 49 herring gull, 9 lesser black backed gulls and approx 60 swifts. Thank you John.
Next to the sightings from Bolton Ings via John Seeviour. He gave us the following list of sightings - 2 mute swans with 8 young, 5 little grebes, 4 great crested grebes with 1 young, 5 mallards with 7 young, 8 gadwall, 17 tufted ducks, 10 pochard which included 3 females, 2 cormorants, 44 coots with 17 young, 1 common gull, 2 lesser black backed gull, 2 chiffchaff, 4 willow warbler, 1 whitethroat, 1 green woodpecker, 1 grey heron and 2 little egrets that were seen on the Old Moor field pools from here. Thanks very much John.
Finally from Twitter today we have the sightingsfrom Adwick via Gary Stones, thanks Gary.
He reported these sightings - 3 little egret, 24avocet, 25 redshank with 1 juv, 3 ringed plover, 1 shelduck, pochard with 4 juvs and 1 buzzard.
I'm quite sure that all the usual current birds were around Old Moor today and especially bitterns flying around. Keep reading for info from future blogs for more news of the juvs this year.
There are many brilliantly blue male common blue butterflies around at the moment. Last weekend I spent a while watching them and waiting for them to land... It seemed to me that every time a male landed, it was immediately 'bombed' by another male as if to say, 'get off that trefoil, it's mine!'
Here's a male common blue showing you the lovely underwing.
Lots of damselflies around too. This one is a large red damselfly.
That's it and I'm working on the identification of the grasses at Old Moor. Do have a look at them, we have quite a few different ones and (in my eyes anyway) they are very beautiful plants!
