Hello again, apologies but I don't have many sightings today but I do have news.
The sightings that I have are via Twitter and not the book.
From Dave Simmonite at Old Moor - news of a red kite flying over the Wader Scrape at 2:40pm.
Chris Harris told us of a sanderling on the Wader Scrape this afternoon...lovely little birds too and of a hobby over the Mere.
John Seeviour was at Bolton Ings and gave us the following sightings - one mute swan, three great crested grebe, two little grebe, seven mallard with 12 young mallards, ten gadwall, 17 tufted duck, four pochard, 3 cormorant, a kestrel, four herring gull, 2 LBB gull, one common gull, 7 chiffchaff, two willow warbler, 6 blackcap, two whitethroat and also one lesser whitethroat, one sedge warbler and one jay.
That's it from Twitter so far but if you follow the twitter feed of @Barnsleybsg you'll soon see if anything else is reported.
The big news today is from our wardens and a tweet from the @BarnsleyBSG .
'Old Moor Update - The reedbed path is now closed untill further notice as we have three active bittern nests.'
From an email update via Lauren in the VC comes futher info for you. 'Visitors will still be able to access Bittern Hide and Bittern Bus Stop, but not the path from Bittern Bus Stop to Reedbed Hide.'
I'm sure that you will agree with me when I say that protecting these precious nests from a schedule 1 bird is absolutely paramount.
I'm also sure that you will agree with me when I say that this is great news!!
And on that note, I will finish with a photo in honour of our bitterns.
It was taken a few years ago when I was at the reedbed screen and had a bit of wildlife magic. This bittern wandered nonchalantly around the area in front of the reedbed screen for a little while and it even went fishing!
