Hi Folks! Here is a summary of Old Moor’s sightings for today…

Down the valley from Old Moor, at Bolton Ings, John Seeviour recorded: seven little egret, three great crested grebe, nine mallard, twenty-one gadwall, seven tufted duck, five pochard, two cormorant, three grey heron, three little egret, 156 coot, fifty-four Canada geese, fifty-two greylag, one green woodpecker and one grey wagtail.

He also pointed out that a bittern showed well on the far side of the pond for around twenty minutes! Thanks John.

From Adwick Washland, John Law reported three black-tailed godwit, one common sandpiper and around twenty-eight snipe. Thanks John.

Meanwhile, at Edderthorpe, John Clarkson found: fourteen little egret, 320 lapwing, four snipe, one black-tailed godwit and a green sandpiper. John also counted twenty yellow wagtails. Thanks very much... John.

By now, you will have noticed a bit of a ‘godwitty’ theme to tonight’s sightings and if I add in the eleven black-tailed godwits seen on Carlton Marsh, then you’ll see there were quite a few of these attractive, russet waders out there today.

Of course sandpipers were still around today with three green and three common found variously on the Mere, Scrape or Wath Ings.

And finally, it was good to see seven snipe reported on Wath Ings today. Two pairs of these normally shy waders gave up on the idea of camouflage in order to feed just in front of the hide.

And sadly, that’s it for this evening but, with yet another terrific summer’s day forecast for tomorrow, who knows what might turn up.

Until next time.
