Hi folks! It may have been overcast for much of the day but visitors to Old Moor were far from downcast. Here’s a summary of the birds seen around the reserve today…

A bit more detail from the Dearne? No problem. But first a bit of an advanced plug for Old Moor’s Summer Fete.

Joyously, this weekend has a bank holiday at the end of it and on Monday 27 August, from 10.30 until 4pm, there will be additional activities at Old Moor to celebrate both the holiday and a truly remarkable summer. All details can be found here and on our Facebook page.

Right, back to the news.

At Edderthorpe this morning, Alan Stonier reported: fifteen little egret, one black-tailed godwit, two greenshank, two ringed plover, fourteen snipe, seven yellow wagtail, one buzzard and, high above, swift. Thanks Alan.

Six snipe feeding at Adwick today

Over at Adwick Washland, Gary Haywood reported a short-eared owl hunting around the northern parts of the reserve. Thanks Gary.

Ian Morris also visited Adwick today and recorded: four teal, three grey partridge, one grey heron, two buzzard, one common sandpiper, one greenshank, seventeen snipe, around fifty lapwing, one lesser black-backed gull, two kestrel, two wheatear and one yellowhammer.

With those were: mallard, tufted duck, pheasant, moorhen, coot, black-headed gull, woodpigeon, collared dove, magpie, jackdaw, crow, reed warbler, pied wagtail, greenfinch, linnet and several large ‘charms’ of goldfinch. Thanks Ian.

Greenshank at Old Moor this morning from Paul Gould. Thanks Paul

There were many great sightings today but a favourite was the wheatear at Adwick. Always a treat to see, I shall leave you this evening with one of them.

Until next time.
