Hello there, here's a quick blog just to let you know of a few highlights from yesterday from Old Moor.
There was a great white egret on Wath Ings yesterday. It was right at the back on the right hand side and was keeping company with a little egret and a heron. Every now and then it came out of the foliage so watchers had a better view.
Also seen from the hide at Wath Ings yesterday was a sedge warbler. It was singing and showing every now and then right in front of the hide.
Highlights from the Wader Scrape included four little ringed plover in the muddy patch to the left of the hide, two dunlin and an arctic tern flying around the Mere and also sitting on posts.
A bittern was booming constantly and could be heard from all over Old Moor.
It was lovely to see a few butterflies on the wing yesterday, particularly the beautiful orange tip. There were quite a few about and some stopped briefly to feed on the blackthorn blossom. Also look out for them in the little garden by the VC as the forgetmeknots are in flower and also the garlic mustard is coming into flower. Orange tip butterflies feed on both of these.
Here's a male orange tip on the blackthorn blossom.
Other butterflies seen yesterday were brimstone, comma and peacock.
This peacock butterfly was also feeding on the blackthorn blossom.
A greenshank and a ringed plover were on Wombwell and at Adwick the highlights were avocet, garganey, ringed plover, curlew, little owl and sedge warbler.
There were quite a few bumblebees and also hoverflies out too - spring must have finally arrived!
I'll finish with another insect that has also emerged this week, a ladybird. This one is a six spot and was 'hanging out' on Green Lane...
Have a lovely weekend :)
