The Hedgehog Hilton appeared on site this week – yes, our very own hedgehog hotel! It seems staff here got a bit carried away making it and there were a few comments to the effect that it’s probably big enough to house a badger, but it’s now taken pride of place in the bird-feeder garden and awaiting it’s first guests.
It’s also the latest bit of the big make-over the garden’s been getting since February, all aimed at not just keeping the birds happy, but our other wildlife friends too. There’s already been special planting to attract insects, encourage nesting and protect the area and lots of lovely rotting log piles (as that’s good for the old creepy crawlies too!). And in case visitors are wondering what a big `V’ shaped tree stump is doing in the middle of it all, the hope is all that soft, wet wood will prove a very attractive nesting site for Willow Tits.
There’s still a few finishing touches due, including a shallow bird pool, so they can all have a bath and a drink and another `hotel' for the aforementioned creepy crawlies. What, with also a `wide choice places to eat’ as well, it’s beginning to sound like Benidorm for birds!
